BACH CHEZ CIORAN

An Angelic Tragedy

"Bach chez Cioran : An Angelic Tragedy" brings together Romanian pianist Mara Dobresco and actor Volodia Serre to explore the music of Bach alongside the writings of Cioran.

"Do we know how to hear the secret melody of each thing ? To listen to the smile ? What sounds emanate from gazes and die in the melodious shadow of the heart ? Everything timidly takes voice, as if things were raising their chords to the sky."
- Cioran

After several fruitful collaborations, such as the concert-reading based on Correspondancesby Francis Poulenc, or more recently the performance Il faut donc que vous fassiez un rêve(from texts by Eugène Ionesco and Marin Sorescu), Mara Dobresco and Volodia Serre have chosen to delve into Bach's music and its profound impact on Cioran. The Romanian philosopher wrote extensively about music, particularly Bach's compositions, which gradually became "his religion." Mara and Volodia offer a suspended moment, in an undefined time, aiming to make us, if only for a brief moment, "contemporaries of angels."

LES CONTES

by Perraud and Dobresco

Enchanted forests, old castles, spells, beautiful princesses... fairy tales have inspired countless musical works. Like a "sonorous" picture book that we will open page by page, we invite you to discover enchanted landscapes—from the fairy-tale forests beloved by Dvořák to the Nordic light that bathes Grieg’s music.

Then a procession passing before an old castle (from Bosmans to Mussorgsky) shelters Sleeping Beauty (Ravel), or Cinderella’s glass slipper (Prokofiev). Through the lens of Pierrot (Debussy) or Pulcinella (Stravinsky), we will also take a few steps into the world of Commedia dell’Arte to make you smile, and perhaps even laugh, with their clumsy antics or clever tricks...

REPERTOIRE :

Ravel : Pavane of Sleeping Beauty (transcription by Jacques Charlot for solo piano)

Prokofiev : Cinderella

Janáček : Tale

Stravinsky : Italian Suite (Introduzione, Serenata, Aria)

Dvořák : The Silence of the Forest

Grieg : Adagio

Henriette Bosmans : Cortege

Mussorgsky : The Old Castle

Kodály : Sonatina

Clara Schumann : Romance

Debussy : Sonata

LE FRUIT DU SILENCE

Some albums elevate and disturb because they reach into the distant and the unspeakable. Le Fruit du silence digs deep into this vein with Beethoven's final sonatas. Without overshadowing the creations of Philippe Hersant and Oscar Strasnoy, Beethoven's work questions silence and finds an answer in a suspended moment, with Le Fruit du silence, an evocative score by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks (performed by: Mara Dobresco, Nicolas Dupont, Manon Galy, Clément Holvoet, and Kacper Nowak).

"The choice of Sonata Op. 110 was an obvious one for me, as it represents a moving testament to the long convalescence Beethoven endured while composing it, the 'struggle of man against suffering,' and the 'victory of the spirit.' I find that this Beethovenian message resonates especially today, after the period we have just lived through, which is why I wanted to transform and elevate this experience by leaving an artistic testimony that is this Fruit of Silence... I wanted to share this project with two composers whom I admire immensely. The music of Oscar Strasnoy, like that of Philippe Hersant, has accompanied me for a long time and is part of my journey as an interpreter. Both creations converse beautifully with the sonatas Op. 109 and 110. Oscar Strasnoy's Le Tombeau de Monjeau directly connects with Op. 109, while Philippe Hersant's Benedictus dialogues with Sonata Op. 110 and the Missa Solemnis Beethoven was composing around the same time."

While the press has hailed her previous album, Soleils de Nuit, as an "act of faith," this one is equally so—conceived far from the limelight, but with the aim of celebrating the light of intimacy and spirituality.

PRESENTATION FILE

A projet by Mara Dobresco based on the "Journal en miettes" of Eugène Ionesco and Poems of Marin Sorescu.
With Denis Lavant and the Quatuor Face à Face.

Staging : Volodia Serre
Musique by : Arvo Pärt, Oscar Strasnoy, John Cage, Philippe Hersant, György Ligeti and improvisations

Mara Dobresco has brought with her fragments of her native Romanian culture. While music has always been at the forefront of her life as a pianist, she has long felt a desire to pair it with poems, letters, and fragments of texts that emerge from her first life.

Volodia Serre, for his part, has collaborated with composers since his early days as a director—not only in opera but also in projects more specifically related to theatre.

Denis Lavant, meanwhile, is a self-taught musician with a passion for improbable instruments. He makes music from anything—from words, of course (he’s an exceptional poet), to objects he encounters, whether a piece of paper, a seashell, a bottle, or a blade of grass. He also enjoys playing the clarinet and concertina.

The three of them, together with the two percussionists, combine their musical sensibilities to create a truly original score for this project, weaving together the various elements they invoke. This work, born from a mix of theater, poetry, and contemporary music, becomes a deeply collaborative exploration of sound, word, and performance.

With Artistic Collaboration from : Marie Ballot

Have you ever found yourself thinking of a piece of music while contemplating a photograph ? Or, conversely, do certain pieces of music evoke specific images for you ?

Imagine the unexpected meeting of a photograph and a musical work : each expressing an atmosphere, a feeling... What would happen if both senses—sight and sound—led you in the same direction ? If two works, though not created with one another in mind, evoked a similar emotion ? That’s a much rarer experience...

This is the experience attempted by Mara Dobresco, Nicolas Krüger, and Eric Sanger-Monteros, who brought together Sanger-Monteros’ photographs with Philippe Hersant’s piano collection Éphémères.

From this union, where each art form elevates the other, emerges a rare experience that stirs intense emotions. The photographs and music create a unique, immersive journey, where visual and musical elements intertwine seamlessly, deepening the emotional resonance of both.
